First run of my GSX338 V2 P Sport Hydro
I took my new hydro out on the lake for its first run. It went great. I never really got past half throttle. The water looked smooth enough but it wasn’t. The boat was hitting full size boat wakes that were barely visible and flying out of the water a lot. Still it was a lot of fun and the esc and motor never got past 105 degrees. The video was tough for my wife to shoot because everything was moving. We were in our boat which was rocking and turning a bit and the model boat was moving pretty quick. The sun made it hard for her to see the screen on the phone to track the boat too. Still it came out good and gives you an idea of how it went. I have no idea how fast it was going. I don’t have a good way to track speed yet.

    Good afternoon, I have downloaded and studied the design of this V-twin engine which I found very interesting. I have a question relevant to the operating modes given by the inversion block. As for my undesrtanding, only one valve/cylinder set can be operated at the same time, meaning that never both valve/cylinder sets can be operated simultanueously. I guess this because the compressed air connections through the inversion block do not allow to pressurize both valve/cylinder sets simultanously. Therefore, as per my understanding, the inversion block can feed only one valve/cylinder set at the same time. Can you please be so kind to just let me know if my understanding is right or please advise otherwise. Thanks a lot in advance.

      @DeltaAPmech 10 місяців тому

      Well im not sure what your asking, but here is what is happening when it runs. The incomming air goes into the valve in the center. That valve determines what direction the engine will turn and it also allows for a small amount of speed control. From there it goes to both cylinder assembly's spool valves. Those valves determine when and what side of both pistons gets pressurized relative to the crankshaft position. The cylinder timing is setup that one piston gets pressure about every 90degrees of crank rotation. This allows the engine to be self starting. The cylinders are double acting so that makes this engine act like a 4 cylinder engine. Does that help ? Mine runs really nice on steam fed by a propane fired boiler. Pete

      Thanks! The little motor is there to spin a little propeller that’s in a pipe. It’s there as a backup to get the boat back if something goes wrong with the steam engine or boiler. It has been used a couple of times. Keeping a boiler and all that linkage happy isn’t always easy.

    I just found your videos on the Liberty Belle today and have looked at all of them and your build log. I'm really impressed that you tackled making proper Western Rivers steamboat engines and worked through the problems to get them to work at this size. I've been interested in this design of engines since a trip on the Delta Queen in 1974. The valve gear, including the California cut-off, all made sense by just watching the engines for about five minutes. I've made several starts at making myself a set of stern wheel engines and done a lot of research on them, although as you have found information on them is scarce. I started again on building a pair a few months ago. They will have about twice the stroke of yours. These days it will be much easier than my attempts 40 years ago. Free 3D cad software, 3D printers, and resins that can be used for investment casting have all come together to make me rethink how I build parts for my steam models. What was only possible with complex fabrication or complex patterns and cores for sand casting is now much easier and gives more detail. I've cast a number of parts for my live steam locomotive and plan to use the same technology for the pair of steamboat engines. So far I'm to the point of drawing and printing a number of parts to see how they looked and would fit together but have only cast a few of the parts in bronze. By the way, I got a good chuckle when I saw that you had referenced the web page on Western Rivers steamboat engines that I created 22 years ago! I created it when I couldn't find anything at all on the Internet giving describing this style of steam engine. A suggestion for anyone wanting to build a Western Rivers steamboat model. Find a copy of "Western Rivers Steamboat Cyclopedium" by Alan Bates. Although there is little on the engines, there is a wealth of information on steamboats and steamboat modeling that I haven't found anywhere else. A note on the author - in addition to his interest in steamboat history he was the marine architect responsible for the design of the Natchez steamboat operating in New Orleans. In the past he also sold drawings of several steamboats for modeling purposes. Again, nice work!

      Mr Morris, I am really sorry I didn't see your post before today. I'm not very consistent at checking my channel. That being said thank you very much for a really nice post ! I am thrilled that someone that contributed to my project (as you did thru your web site showing nice detail of these great engines) found my little project. I would love to see your engine as it develops. Are you posting the build anywhere ? If not consider doing so. I had fun sharing my project and enjoied input that folks from all over gave me and I hoped to inspire others at the same time. I think your right, a 3d printer would help with the process. I have low end one now and it sure would have helped to quickly make temporary parts to get the configuration and movements correct before going straight to cutting metal. Casting sure would be nice too. Turning big hunks of metal to mostly chips took a lot of time and was fairly wasteful. ( especially the miss cut parts that seemed to constantly show up ) Bronze would be a much better metal than the aluminum I used. It all runs just fine but when I tore down the engines to measure them to put them in fusion 360 I found small amounts of corrosion in the bores of the cylinders. That prompted me to learn how to anodize at home. I treated the engines with that process and time will tell if it helped. The Delta Queen must have been great to see. I went down to New Orleans and rode the Natchez as you probably saw. It was fantastic. I also visited the steamer Portland in Portland Oregon but we didn't time it right to be on her during one of the excursions that happen from time to time. It was still great to see full scale machinery like that. The Disney Liberty Bell my model is patterned after it also a great ride to be able to sit close to the running steam engines and watch them push the boat around. An amazing example of model engineering in a sternwheeler if you haven't seen is Mike's W.T. Preston - www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1497645-1-32-Scale-W-T-Preston-Sternwheeler-Build Any questions you might have about my model I'd be glad to try and answer Thanks so much !!! Thank you for this upload. A really nice bit of kit! I am intrigued further by the offset to connecting rods, there are precisely accurate angle differential or is 90 degrees sound right a bit like frequency is measured by hertz both connecting rods in this case are lagging and leading?

    • @DeltaAPmech
      @DeltaAPmech 2 роки тому

      Yes the connecting rods are at 90 degrees to each other. Its setup that way to enable the two cylinder engine to self start at any position the paddle shaft/paddle happens to be in at rest. Because of orientation of those rods the power output of the system was not very even through the cycle. I had to play with the cam timing and valve durations of both the intake and exhaust to try to get the paddle to turn at a consistent rate. The other fly in the ointment was the boiler water feed pump. It takes a good bit of energy to operate and it loads down the engine on its compression stroke quite a bit. It took lots of fiddling and trial/error to get it all turning at a consistent rate. Turns out putting the paddle in the water smoothed out the movement of the paddle even further. That was a nice accidental find :)

      @@DeltaAPmech I bet you pleased with yourself now it all turns about that workmanship you have explained well. Thank you for sharing this. I just bought a book called Rivermen and that was published in the 70's, in which you may agree a good find - all leather coated too. It had one neat drawing inside of a steamboat paddle wheeler she was called Far East, well I build model boats for a hobby and it was intriguing to find online UA-cam of the mechanics of this newer as first seen insightful contraption to which yours I found was the best video thanks. Yes I agree with what you are saying the precision must be spot on; plenty food for food on the engine type however is that one stroke? With what you are saying also I guess there were quite a lot of trees cut down to run the steamboats momentum, perhaps not the ideal solution nowadays though no one can ignore the steam powered engine. A very simple design in Engineering anyhow you maybe interested to know even further President Lincoln was involved in the first designs. Though these boats never lasted long typical of habitat nature surroundings and, those grasshoppers were something else to low river bank warnings get over almost all.

    • @DeltaAPmech
      @DeltaAPmech 2 роки тому

      @@glennnicholas1602 Sounds like a neat book. This is a twin cylinder double stroke setup. Each cylinder pushes and pulls. Yep, I'll bet lots of wood was needed ! Coal was used too and now the few remaining ones use fuels like oil and cng. These things aren't the most maneuverable boats and rivers full of logs stumps and sandbars took their toll ! Still with all their inefficiency's and short comings compared to todays standards they cant be beat for character !!!

    I'm building my own live steam sternwheeler In g scale do you have any suggestions or advice I've built a haul out of 1/4 inch ply scrap and have now let it set in it's unfinished State for about a month now

      Hey Wes ! Well off the top of my head, I was advised by a fellow boat builder to add a couple of strips of wood on the bottom of the hull to help with tracking on a flat bottom boat. Mine are about 1/2 inch deep made from 1/8 ply and run the length of the flat part of the belly and each one lines up with a set of rudders. Research about the full scale sternwheelers showed me that two sets of rudders one set forward of the paddle and one set aft would give the most control in both forward and reverse. I never ran without all four rudders but this big boat turns really nicely ! The added bonus is they hang just a little lower than the paddle and give the paddle wheel a bit of protection. I'd love to help with any questions you come up with. Hope that helps Pete

    That steam engine is just stunning; like the real thing....what a achievement & eye for detail; would like to see your boat when it is complete & sailing...

      Thanks ! It was a lot of fun to build. It is based off of pictures I found of the full scale engines from long ago. Here is a video of the boat on the water under steam. There are several more videos of it on my channel ua-cam.com/video/BSn42yYE9_A/v-deo.html

    Bonjour, Very efficient and nice boat. I especially appreciate the technicality of the retractable keel which also seems very efficient. Amicalement, Raphaël

    Looks awesome, how long did it take you to build it?

      Thanks ! Sorry for the delay I missed the notification of your question. I cant remember for sure, but looking at my pictures it seems like It took around three months for me to machine the parts and build the engine. I posted the process here - www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2759179-A-Smaller-Steam-Boat The engine work starts on the second page near the bottom.

      There is rubber still stuck to the fender and bumper ! It was fun once but Probably won’t happen again, I don’t want to fix what will break !
